Member representing Pankshin, Kanke and Kanam Federal Constituency in the National Assembly Hon. Timothy Golu is pleading with Government and spirited individual for urgent intervention over snake invasion in Kanke and Kanam which are both part of his constituency.
The communities first noticed an increase in Snakes presence after a heavy downpour few weeks ago that resulted to flooding that came along with the reptiles.
Hon. Timothy Golu while briefing Jounalists in Jos said “over 50 persons had been bitten by snakes in just two weeks, some had died while others are in critical conditions in various hospitals and traditional snake treating homes in the state”.
Golu added that 13 victims were at Zamko Hospital in Langtang, 20 in traditional treatment homes, seven in herbals centres, while the rest visit the centres for daily from their homes for treatment owing to lack of space in the hospitals to admit them.
The Lawmaker who also described the situation as very scary and pathetic said snakes now moves openly in the communities, mostly in pairs.
He urged the Federal and Plateau State Governments to treat the matter as a national medical emergency like HIV/AIDS and the Ebola virus by fumigating homes and farmlands.
As a matter of precaution, Hon. Golu is advising people to use hand gloves and rain boots while on their farms to minimize occurrence.
