The Plateau State House of Assembly has expressed its readiness to partner with local government in the state for better tax legislature that will improve economic growth. The House standing committee on local government and chieftaincy Affairs gave the assurance of continuation in the overall function to local administration in the state.
The second round of the committee’s over sight visit took them to Mangu, Bokkos, Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas were the management committee chairman indentified insecurity as one of the major challenges their localities are facing.
They noted that because of the security challenges, economic activities are yet to pick up which is affecting revenue collection.
The local government chairmen equally called on the state house of assembly to critically look into the tax law at the local government level for possible amendment to correspond with the current reality in the country.
The management committee chairmen also indentify inherited back log of staff allowances demoralizing its work force, unpaid leave grant, salaries and some other challenges hindering their smooth operation at the local government level.
They were however quick to agree that despite the challenges, they were able to addressed some of the issues. The chairmen commended the house of assembly for its stance on insuring peace and security in the state and assured of them of their support.
Earlier, chairman of the committee and member representing Jos North-North constituency, Ibrahim Baba Hassan spoke strongly on the need for the local government to source for alternative means of revenue saying the era of depending on the federal government is over. Other members of the committee in their contributions said the visit is also aimed at promoting the change philosophy of the present administration hence the need for local government to have a new concept of doing things that will help improved their revenue base. They also noted that the revenue that interfaces with the management committee chairmen is to have a value chain between the local government and state house of assembly in addressing some gray areas that will enhance the smooth operations of the local authorities.
