ADDRESS OF THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF PLATEAU STATE, RT HON SIMON BAKO LALONG AT THE THANKSGIVING SERVICE COMMEMORATING THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CREATION OF PLATEAU STATE

Protocol

The 3rd of February, 2016, commemorates the 40th Year of the creation of Plateau State. The memory of that day in 1976 when our distinguished son and elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon, pronounced the carving out of Plateau State from the Old Benue–Plateau State, gives us as a people every reason for thanksgiving. It was on that day that our common destiny as a people, with common faith, hope, values and cultural orientation were shaped by the geographical definition of our boundaries.

In these forty (40) Years of our journey, we have no doubt had periods of sadness and joy; but in all of these years, the gains of our existence and struggles as a people, have given us every reason to say thank you to the Almighty for our preservation as a people, and for the exploits we have made through the distinguish selfless service of our sons and daughters in various spheres of Endeavour.

As a State we have witnessed a rise in the array of Plateau Citizens in Public Service; as a State we have seen the position our sons and daughters have occupied in Military and Paramilitary service. Not only have we produced a Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, we have occupied through dint of hard work, the highest of positions in defence, the Nigeria Custom, the Nigeria Immigration amongst others:

Our Sons and Daughters have achieved the highest feat in the Legal Profession, the medical profession and Research Institutes.

In the Academia, we have had our very own, head Universities across the country.

We have made our mark in sports and the entertainment industry producing the best our country can ever imagine

Our State has set the pace as the moral rectitude of the nation with God’s Servants availing their blessings to Nations as the criss-cross the world to preach.

In Agriculture, the gift of our soil and weather has made us the research ground for many food crops and vegetables; our scenic beauty and natural touristic endowment has made us a sight to behold in the Tourism world. Our cultural artistry has made us to be globally celebrated and envied.

Our State in these years has witnessed God’s deliverance from epidemics and natural disasters notwithstanding the senseless vicious circle of violence we have encountered in the last one and half decade.

Even our violent conflicts, have seen us uniting beyond the imagination of dooms prophets and for all these, we have every reason to thank the Lord.

Today, we lift up our hands in thanksgiving for all our leaders past and present, and for our people who have toiled and nurtured us in the values that have kept us as a people.

Today we bow our heads in prayers that God will unite us as a people and keep us faithful to the fundamental principles that have made us a State after God’s heart. We pray to God to uphold our State and help us get over the challenges to our peaceful co-existence.

Today we pray to God to help us as leaders to be committed to the pursuit of Justice, Righteousness in governance and the socio-economic well being of our people.

Today we pray that God will provide all the strength, focus, soundness of mind and selflessness in service that will help us deliver on our promise of;

  • Peace, Security and Good Governance
  • Human Capital Development and Social Welfare
  • Agriculture and Rural Transformation
  • Industrialization and Entrepreneurship
  • Physical Infrastructure and Sustainable Environment

Today as we thank God for our being, and we ask Him to help us as a People to be truthful, transparent, accountable and dedicated in our services as leaders and the led.

To all who have joined in our fast and prayers for the State, I affirm with a solemn conviction, that this God, who has brought us thus far, will guide our actions and direct our paths in our march to the position of greatness He has destined for us.

May the days, months and years ahead, give us reasons to ponder and sustain our prayers for our Country, State and our people.

Great is the faithfulness of our God and I believe, what He has began in the life of our State, He will do it even unto the end.

Happy 40th Anniversary of our State to all us and may God bless Plateau State.

Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong

Executive Governor, Plateau State
