The Director General, National Film and Video Censors Board NFVCB, Mrs. Patricia Bala said the board has partnered with Google to curb the menace poised by the invention of social media in regulating online video/picture contents in Nigeria. She maintained that the concern is not only in Nigeria but even other African countries have expressed worries over the trend of video contents been uploaded online.
The DG stated this recently when the board holds a 2 days (7th-8th March, 2017) International Conference on Film Censorship (ICFC 2017) at the Crest Hotel in Jos the Plateau state capital.
“The best thing we are doing is to liaise with the social media platforms and tell them our discontent because they have the technology that will enable them control what we don’t want online, we watched keenly and understand that social media is been controlled by the users, the content providers don’t come to us first before releasing movies online,” she lamented.
According to the DG, new media has poised serious threat to the regulatory body in Nigeria compelling the National Film and Video Censors Board to draft an understanding with Google and come up with a regulatory guide for contents that are uploaded on the net, any content(s) found to be offensive will be taken down.
Mrs. Bala speaking further on disturbing contents on Facebook maintained that the board is making efforts to reach out to Facebook to tell them their grievances and work out ways of controlling contents same with Google company.
According to her, “This international conference is about film censorship and regulation, the objectives is to generates ideas from stakeholders on how we can strengthen our censorship guidelines to conform with global best practices. Nigerian films are produced for people to buy and the market is not limited to Nigeria, it is worldwide now and we need to hear from others and also what movie producers are expected to know” she said.
“If you know these things you are expected to do, you will be able to self-regulate the production of your content by yourself so that it will easily be acceptable by the board because you will know what the authorities who does the quality control before a film is distributed to the market wants to make things easier for film producers in the Country, she affirmed
