Lalong, CAN condemns Riyom attack

Governor of Plateau state Simon Lalong has expressed deep shock and sadness over the barbaric attack of Tuesday 7th November in Rim village of Riyom local government in which 9 people were killed and several others injured by yet to be identified gunmen.

The governor in a message by his special adviser on media and publicity Dan Manjang condemned the savage act in its entirety especially that it passes for deliberate attempt for the perpetuators to throw Riyom local government area back into the dark days of violence.

He expressed worry that this inhumane attack is coming at a time the state has made considerable improvements in building intra and inter ethnic cohesion for sustainable peace amongst the various ethnic groups in the entire Riyom local government and neighboring communities.

He assures that the positive efforts will not be allowed to be spirited away by evil agents of destabilization. Governor Lalong commiserated with the families of those who lost their loved ones and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He also ensured the people of Riyom in particular and Plateau citizens in general that the government will continue to intensify security efforts and intelligence to identify perpetuators and assure that they are brought to book.

According to an eye witness, a golf wagon with registration number A729GML was ambushed by the assailants at about 8pm Tuesday night along Diyan Gako junction near Rim while coming back from Makera market.

The eyewitness explained that the assailant opened fire on the vehicle while dropping a passenger at the junction, killing 7 of the occupants of the vehicle on the spot while 2 died in the hospital.

Reacting to the incident, member representing Riyom constituency in the Plateau state house of assembly Daniel Dem described the killings as heinous, saying that its time those behind the series of attacks in the constituency are brought to justice.

On their parts, the Transition Committee Chairman Riyom LGA, Emmanuel Danboyi called on the federal government to as a matter of urgency investigate the series of attacks on Riyom citizens.

Representative of Berom Youth Movement and Christian Association of Nigeria also condemned the attack and called on security agencies to fish out the attackers. The attack by yet to be identified assailants is a setback in the peace building effort by the state government.
