Govt calls on youths to avoid PVC buying, fake news and hate speech

As the 2019 General Elections draw nearer the Federal Government during
the weekend through it’s Federal ministry of Information and culture call
on all Nigerians especially youths to avoid any form of election violence
especially Fake News, Hate Speech, Vote and PVC buying which is capable
of destroying the peace of the Nation.
The Minister of Information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, represented
by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Grace Isu Gekpe made the call
at a day National sensitization workshop organised by the National
Broadcasting Commission on broadcasting media coverage of the 2019
General Elections in Abuja.
He said the mandate of the National Broadcasting Commission is to
monitor and sanction any broadcasting station that flaunts the set NBC’s
He however, lamented at the level at which fake News go viral on social
media and urge the NBC to set out policies to mitigate this menace that is
likely of putting the country in a state of disrepair.
” Fake News, Hate Speech, vote and PVC buying is not a fight to be won
by the Federal Government alone but a collective efforts would be enough
to Curb the menace from all its ramifications.
“I call on the youths especially to kick against selling their votes as it is
same as selling their destinies.
“Don’t be like Esau who sold his Birth right for a common plate of food “.
He advised”.
The Minister also assured that the Federal government is not relenting on
it’s effort to checkmate such.
Earlier in his welcome address the Director General, National Broadcasting
Commission, Mallam Is’haq Modibbo Kawu said the aim of the workshop is
to bring together all stakeholders, media and political party leaders to
enlighten them on the dangers fake News, Hate Speech, Vote and PVC
buying posses to the country.
He explained that similar workshops were conducted in the six geopolitical
zones of the country to sensitive political leaders in getting rid of criminality
in our political process.
He therefore, caution broadcasting station to avoid being used by politicians
to disseminate fake News and hate speech especially with elections by the
corner adding that the workshop is the final of the six held across the
geopolitical zones.
similarly, the representative of UN secretary, Ibn Chambas said Nigeria
occupies a strategic position in West Africa and as such is globally
expected to deliver a credible, peaceful and fair elections in 2019, in a
manner that improves upon the performance of the 2015 elections.
He therefore urge all stakeholders to double their efforts in ensuring an
issue based election and to avoid messages of hate and the politics of
acrimony, politics of bitterness and rancor that undermine peace and

of Africa and consoliding their democracy. Africa is looking up to you for
leadership “.
He further observed that there are more women voters and enthusiastic
youths eager to part in nation building as responsible leaders than ever
expected in the country.
Other dignitaries present at the workshop include DG NTA, Yakubu Ibn
Muhammed, Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, VC Baze
University, Professor Peter Nyong Umoh, Director and Mac Arthur
foundation, kole shettima among others.
